August 25-30--2014

Dear Parents,
We had a great time at Seussical Jr.yesterday--the walk was worth the effort and we enjoyed seeing Spencer perform!!
Last week was full of accomplishments and I was happy to see the students working toward learning the new rules and procedures. What a neat bunch of kids!
You should have seen a new reading log for this week (pink paper) as well as homework pages 3-6 from the math practice. Math packet is due on or before Friday of this week.  Please go over the work with your student, then check the assignment and score it. This not only saves valuable class time, but also gives you a chance to see how your child is doing in math.

Math:
 Chapter 1 concepts

  • Model Place Value Relationships
  • Read and Write Numbers
  • Compare and Order Numbers
  • Round Numbers
  • Rename Numbers
  • Add Whole Numbers
  • Subtract Whole Numbers
  • Problem Solving--Comparison Problems w/Addition and Subtraction

Literacy:
The students have already begun reading individually. I have reviewed last year's reading scores and look forward to starting the reading program. Mrs. Marriott has also scheduled time to begin the first benchmark readings for this year. Once all of the data is collected we will begin working in reading groups. We will slowly begin working on rules and procedures for our literacy block throughout the next several weeks.

Science:
We've been learning about the four types of fossils and the students will soon be locating fossils of Utah, making fossils, and researching (and writing about) extinction theories.

 Writing:
The students have read a couple of poems about the first few days of school and are currently putting the final touches on their own "Whatif..." poem styled after Shel Silvertsein's poem titled "Whatif..."

A Few Extra Notes...

Please send an empty, cleaned vegetable can to school with your child as soon as possible, we'll be completing a project with the can this week.
Finally, if you could send in an empty toilet paper roll or two with your child, that would also be helpful for a project we'll work on next month.

August 18th-22nd

Dear Parents,
Wow, what a great start to what is undoubtedly going to be a wonderful year with this bunch of kids!  I'm already in love with them and I'm looking forward to a wonderful year together.  I'm also looking forward to working with each of you as we work to help your child to reach his or her fullest potential this year. Speaking of working together, thanks to all of those that were able to donate classroom items from the wish list--these items are very much appreciated and enhance our learning environment!!!
The first two days of school went very well. We were able to work on classroom rules as well as several classroom procedures. We will continue to work on rules and procedures for several weeks, and of course, continue reviewing throughout the year.
I plan to jump right into the curriculum this week, so look below for a schedule of the upcoming events...

Math:
  •  Our first math unit will consist of  place value concepts. Our district is implementing the new GoMath program again this year, and after teaching the program last year, I can definitely see the advantages to teaching this program. I'm excited to see how well the students understand previous concepts and how well they grasp new and extended 4th grade concepts.

Literacy:
  • The students have already begun reading individually. I have reviewed last year's reading scores and look forward to starting the reading program. We will slowly begin working on rules and procedures for our literacy block throughout the next several weeks.
Science:
  • We'll kick off our 4th grade science by learning about fossils!!!! I've got some fun activities lined up and I think the students will enjoy the great hands on learning.
