February 13, 2012

                                                                                                                  February 13, 2012
Dear Parents,
Our time with Mrs. Beecher is quickly coming to an end. She's been great and we've enjoyed the many exciting lessons she has prepared.  We especially enjoyed the treasure hunt today--thank you to all the parents who made this fun activity possible by donating their time and treats.
You will soon begin to notice a couple of changes in how I will be entering grades into the computer for the remainder of the school year.  Instead of giving the students a missing assignment print out every other week, I will now enter the enter assignments that are due and they will show as a '0' on the print out.  I think this will make it easier for myself, the students, and parents to see more clearly assignments that are missing. Students will still be able to turn in any missing assignments for partial credit before the end of each term.
I talked with the students today about turning over a little more responsibility to them in obtaining a high standard of achievement for themselves. I normally check assignments, hand the assignment back to the students and ask them to redo the problems they missed. Once corrections have been made I enter their "final grade" into the grading system. I'm now going to give each student a choice in whether they would like to try to improve a score.  We've talked about working hard and being proud of ourselves, so I think the students will take the opportunity to improve scores wherever possible.

Book Report: Look for a bright yellow science packet to come home this week. There will be no book report for February or March. Instead,  all 4th grade students will be required to participate in the science fair. More information will be sent home as our school science fair committee provides it, but for now, be thinking of some ideas.  Last week we had tons of fun as Ethan A.'s grandma (Mrs. Demille, the science teacher at Cedar Middle School) came in and got us all pumped up and excited while she taught the scientific process and completed some fun experiments.  The science fair will be held on March 22, 2012.
